The role of adult education programmes in sensitizing the adult population on environmental degradation: the case of Handeni district
(University of Dar es Salaam, 1994) Kimweri, Peter Hosea
The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of adult education programmes in sensitizing the adult population on environmental degradation. Four villages in Handeni District, Tanga Region, Tanzania mainland were investigated. The sample comprised of ninety two (92) respondents, among who eighty were villagers selected through simple random sampling, six district officials and six project officials both selected through purposive sampling technique. Four data collecting methods were employed namely documentary review, interview, questionnaires and observation. The major findings of the study revealed that the human environment, activities that cause environmental degradation problems arising from environmental destruction and the age group most responsible for environmental degradation were well known to the majority of the adults. Nevertheless, some adults were not aware of environmental degradation and activities that cause it. Thus the danger of environmental destruction still stands a chance. Also the findings showed that there was awareness among most adults that environmental degradation could be arrested through environmental conservation measures. However, some adults were not aware that conservation of the environment is practicable. It became evident that the methods and approaches used at Gombero and Mafisa villages were learned to be more appropriate to adult learning than those used at Kang'ata and Kwamagome villages. Finally the study findings confirmed that most actors had a positive attitude towards the project which was aimed at conserving the environment. But some villagers had a negative attitude towards the project claiming that it interfered with their daily activities, and they hated the idea of buying seeds and seedlings. In line with the research findings and conclusions it was recommended that HIAP, as an adult education programme, should adopt the most appropriate methods and approaches for effective adult learning. Furthermore, it was recommended that the Handeni District Council should give HIAP full assistance so as to establish the programme to adults in all degraded areas in the district. Also, the Ministry of Education and Culture was recommended to design an adult education curriculum that includes Environmental Education as an important area of study. To the Government of Tanzania it was recommended that it should initiate and coordinate Environmental Education programmes for adults.
