AsseT RF planning tool propagation modelling for improved outdoor path loss prediction accuracy at 900 MHz band: a case of Dar es Salaam Urban
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2018) Kimaro, Livingstone Lazaro
The use of propagation path loss models that come with RF planning software packages in an environment for which they were not designed impedes smooth and accurate RF coverage planning or siting of radio base station sites in optimum locations and result to inaccurate interference analysis from incorrect interference predictions. Unreliable RF planning tools may hinder network expansion and lead to poor system performance and quality of services offered to the users. In this research outdoor continuous wave measurement were carried out at 900 MHz band in the urban environment of Dar es Salaam city for calibration of Standard Propagation Model (SPM) used by Asset RF planning tool. The k-parameters or model coefficients were tuned to optimal values for better prediction error statistics and thus improved propagation path loss prediction accuracy. Graphical and statistical analysis were used to validate the proposed path loss model. Through this research work it has been shown that the proposed calibrated model performs better in predicting the path loss compared to conventional Okumura-Hata model and the Asset’s default SPM model. The ensuing tuned model has a mean error μ ̅ of -0.68 dB and standard deviation of error σ of 7.64 dB, the propagation path loss prediction accuracy of Asset RF planning tool has been improved. Proposed model will improve the coverage and interference predictions of the RF planning tool thus offer better results during planning and/or optimization of Dar es Salaam urban radio access network. Leveraging on this improved predictive optimization is implicit in cost savings.
