Evaluation of the effectiveness of graphic design curricula in Tanzania: a case study of Dar es Salaam city and Bagamoyo town
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2014) Kilonzo, Kiagho
This study evaluated the effectiveness of Graphic Design curricula that are used by institutions, which teach Graphic Design in Dar es Salaam and Bagamoyo, Tanzania. The emphasis is put on the relevance of curricula with intention to see if the institutions computer aided design (CAD). During training, more emphasis is put on identification of educational backgrounds of Graphic Design instructors, content in Graphic Design programmes, availability and accessibility of the latest Graphic Design computer software and the optional courses that are offered during the trainings. Techniques of stratification, random and purposive sampling were used to collect data through interview, observation and questionnaire. The study found that the Graphic Design curricula are deficient in terms of teaching facilities, qualified instructors and course contents. They are generally lacking important areas in the training of Graphic Design, such as the principles and elements of design, other relevant disciplines and fieldwork for students. Students are, therefore, ill prepared because of this narrow perspective in Graphic Design training. This study recommends that, in Tanzania, there should be universal Graphic Design curricula of different levels, such as curriculum for certificate, diploma and bachelor levels, with clear instructions on how to implement appropriate strategies for each curriculum. Graphic Design should also be taught, in Tanzania at all the three educational levels as a programme itself, not as a course or component in another programme
