(University of Dar es Salaam, 2018) Kilato, Jeremiah Sebastian
This study explored the potentials for Tanzanian firms to strategically couple with Sino-Centric global production networks in Tanzania with specific reference to five selected firms. The study was guided by product life cycle and internationalization theories. Given its strength in generating comprehensive data, the case study design was used to bridge the knowledge gap based on both secondary and primary sources of data and information. Data analysis was performed using content analysis whereas relevant themes were provided to support the study results. The presentation and discussions of results were narrative given the fact that all the research questions that guided this study were qualitative in nature. Results on opportunities of Global Production Networks have for firms operating in Tanzania show practical outcomes in the value enhancement to the firms. These opportunities have improved technology transfer, product advertisements and interactions among local firms. Tanzanian firms have captured value via application of the opportunities in form of tenders and business partnerships, which are essential in adding value to the firms through income generation. Research findings reveal that sustainability of local firms in Tanzania is gained through vast business opportunities in different sectors of the economies. Generally, research findings imply that Tanzanian firms should conform to the cultural values and orientations of the Chinese on firm performance to be compatible with their spirit of hard working and commitment.
