Item Language learning strategies use and vocabulary knowledge among Tanzanian learners of Chinese as a foreign language(University of Dar es salaam, 2020) Kilangi, Cyprian TungarazaThis exploratory study investigates the relationship between the use of vocabulary learning strategies and vocabulary knowledge among learners of Chinese as a Foreign Language. A total of 39 University of Dar es Salaam students participated in the study. These participants were from different degree programmes, and they were taking Chinese as an elective course. Data for the study was collected using a vocabulary learning strategy questionnaire, which was divided into discovery and consolidating strategies, and a vocabulary knowledge test, which consisted of single-character word and double-character word knowledge. The data was analysed quantitatively using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). A comparison of the frequency of strategy use indicated no significant difference between the use of discovery strategies and consolidating strategies. A Canonical Correlation Analysis indicated a positive relationship between the vocabulary learning strategy use and vocabulary knowledge and that both the discovery and consolidating strategies were important in establishing this relationship. A further analysis using Pearson’s correlation revealed no significant difference in how single-character words and double-character words relate to both discovery and consolidating strategies. The results reveal that the participants were active language learning strategy users. This underscores the importance of language learning strategies’ use in language learning. The results suggest that the frequent use of vocabulary learning strategies contributes to the development of Chinese vocabulary knowledge among learners.
