Despite its importance in Tanzania, there re challenges facing the performance of local contractors. In order to address these challenges, this study was conducted with the main aim to examine the influence of financial management practices on performance of small and Medium Contactors (SMCs) in Tanzania. The specific objective for the study was to assess the extent to which financial reporting; cash and capital management practices and investments and financing practices influence the performance of SMCs. Data collection methods for this study were the use of questionnaires and in-depth interview. Regression analysis was used to explain the relationship among variables. Data analysis establishes the financial reporting; cash and capital management practices as well as investments and financing practices influence the performance of SMCs. The study recommends Contractors Registration Board CRB) to provide training programmes in financial management skills for the owners of SMCs and provide a platform for large contractors (Class One) to nurture SMCs to be competent in financial management practices. Moreover, these findings can be used as a basis for specific research on Tanzania’s financial management practices, such as financial reporting and analysis, working capital management, fixed assets, budget capital and planning
