Developing sightseeing tour programs in Tanzania's urban areas: a case study of Dar es Salaam City.
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2003) Kibona, Oscar Anyambilile
This study has looked at the possibilities of developing sightseeing tour programs in Tanzania's urban areas by focusing the empirical study on Dar es Salaam city. The availability of potential tourist attractions was identified as the prerequisite for developing successful sightseeing tour programs. The study, therefore, identified potential tourist attractions based in Dar es Salaam city and then undertook a survey of foreign visitors in order to find out the extent of attractiveness of those attractions as well as the likelihood of being visited. The findings of the study indicate that Tanzania's urban areas have wide varieties of potential tourists attractions. Although the study identified many attractions based in Dar es Salaam city only twenty specific attractions were selected for the purpose of empirical testing. Respondents' evaluation of attractiveness and likelihood of visitations indicate that the attractions are appealing enough to be visited. It has also been found out that the majority of foreign visitors who visit the country are not informed of the many tourist attractions which the country possesses. The overall findings of the study indicate that there is high possibilities of developing successful urban-based sightseeing tour programs in Tanzania. This is due to the availability of a variety of attractions that have high likelihood of being visited.
