    The impact of wildlife conservation on rural livelihoods: the case of Ngarambe-Tapika wildlife Management area.

    'Participatory' or 'community based ' approaches to conservation and natural resource management have become increasingly popular after the failure of the so called 'fences-and-fines' approach. An alternative approach has been introduced under the name of Community-Based Wildlife Management. Consequently Wildlife Management Areas is one form that has spread rapidly throughout the country with the aim of widening participation in the wildlife industry, improving livelihoods and promote 'fair share' of wild life income. This study was carried out in Ngarambe­ Tapikas WMA, Rufiji District from October 2009 to March 2010. The study applies the Sustainable Livelihoods Framework and Political Ecology to assess the impact of wildlife conservation on local livelihoods around WMAs. For the questionnaire survey, a 10% sampling intensity was used and a sample of 70 households was randomly selected from two villages of Ngarambe and Tapika. Data was collected through individual and key informants interviews, focus group discussion and review of secondary sources. The study identified that agriculture is the major activity accounting for 96% of livelihoods base for people. Wildlife utilisation activities taking place in the area are tourist and resident hunting, which provide highest proportion of income, an average of 80% income in each year to CBO. Although the creation of the WMA is supposed to devolve powers from central authorities to the communities my research has shown that villagers in Ngarambe and Tapika are unable to have full control of wildlife because the government still retains the control and power to make strategic decisions on conservation and utilization of resources
