    The mechanisms for promoting women’s enrolment in vocational education training in Temeke district, Tanzania

    The study examined mechanisms for promoting the enrolment of women in Vocational Education Training (VET) in Tanzania. Its objectives were to: (i) investigate the enrolment of women in Vocational Education Training in Tanzania; (ii) establish the factors that hinder the enrolment of women for Vocational Education Training in Tanzania; (iii) identify the challenges to the enrolment of women for Vocational Education Training in Tanzania (iv) establish the strategies that can help promote the enrolment of women for Vocational Education Training in Tanzania; and A mixed research methods approach informed the study. Purposive, convenient and simple random samplings were used to obtain a sample of 92 respondents. Data were collected through interviews, questionnaires, and documentary review. Qualitative data were subjected to content analysis whereas quantitative data were analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20.0. The study revealed the following findings. First, the study found that the enrolment of women in VET in Tanzania is stagnant. Second, it was established that factors which hinder the enrolment of women in VET in Tanzania include. Third, it was found that women faced challenges such as stereotyping, negative parental attitudes and wrong beliefs which hindered their enrolment in VET. Fourth, the study found that strategies employed to promote the enrolment of women in VET were ineffective. Based on the findings it is concluded that there are no a well-defined mechanisms for promoting the enrolment of women in VET in Tanzania. As a result, the study recommended that viable measures such as establishment of gender mainstreaming programmes in all government VET centres should be taken into account.
