(University of Dar es Salaam, 2003) Kessy, Lina Paul
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the status of campus recreational sports programmes at the University of Dar es Salaam and Sokoine University of Agriculture. Specifically the study was intended to examine variables that were assumed to be indices for good campus recreational sports programmes such as institution policy, personnel funds, facilities and equipment, safety, medical care, marketing as well as promotion of campus recreational sports and students' attitude towards campus recreational sports programmes. The study was conducted at the University of Dar es Salaam and Sokoine University of Agriculture with 377 students and 7 games tutors as respondents. Data were collected through questionnaire, interview and checklist. Chi-square (X2) was used to test the assumption at a significance level of 0.05. Findings of the study revealed that, there was inadequate financing for campus recreational sports programmes from the government, games tutors were qualified but few in number. There were institutional policies towards campus recreational sports but, institutions were lacking specific document that advocate campus recreational activities. Safety and medical care were provided and campus recreational activities were marketed and promoted through the use of announcements board. Sports facilities and equipment were available but, few in number and students have positive attitude towards campus recreational sports. On the basis of findings and conclusion, it is recommended that the universities should use auxiliary coaches to organize campus recreational sports programmes as well as the introduction of other sources for funding sports activities Universities should consult sponsors and philanthropist to establish new facilities as well as provision of equipment. Reforms should be made to restructure institutional policies to allocate time for campus recreational activities. Lastly, it is recommended that medical checkup and supervision should be done regularly as well as the adoption of various methods of sports marketing and promotion.
