Assessment of electronic payment system in Tanzania
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2010) Kazibila, Yotham Ntilatwa
Despite of the strong and consistence increase in the use of electronic payment methods in banking, still there have been problems facing the system in this industry. The research problem sought to know the degree of influence of “perceived usefulness” “perceived security” and “external factors” on how they affect “adoption and diffusion” of the system. The general objective was to study the “Assessment of Electronic Payment Systems in Tanzania”. Specific objectives were to examine impact of external factors, influence of perceived usefulness and perceived security on adoption and diffusion of the electronic payment systems in Tanzania. The study was carried out in Dar-es-Salaam region using purposive and simple random sampling techniques from ten selected banks and their consumers respectively. Total of 500 questionnaires were distributed out of which 464 were collected completely filled. Qualitative and quantitative data were collected using questionnaires and documentary review. Data were analyzed using SPSS.The results show that perception of cardholders on security; usefulness and external factors have positive correlation to the adoption and diffusion of the system. Interoperability, poor infrastructures, supervision and security control system were found to be the main problems to users. This study proposed a joint approach in solving the challenges facing this industry by both government and banks, unless there is well collaboration across industries for the proliferation of e-payment cards to allow consumers multiple accesses to multiple locations, improved infrastructures, supervision and strong security control, perception of satisfaction for the services can hardly be realized hence reduce the pace of adoption and diffusion of the system.
