Strategies for enhancing environmental risk communications in Tanzania
(University of Dar es salaam, 2012) Kawinga, Aidan
This study investigated on the best strategies for enhancing environmental risk communications in Tanzania. The study was both exploratory and descriptive in nature; therefore, it utilized both quantitative and qualitative research approaches. Conducted survey used purposive sampling procedures with informants being workers from various private organizations and the public sector. Data collected included identifying the existing environmental risk communication tools used in Tanzania, identified and analysed problems related to existing environmental risk communication tools used in Tanzania, and developed strategies for enhancing environmental risk communication in Tanzania. Results showed that, environmental risks could be communicated by using various tools such as electronic mass media, printed information, workshops and indexing techniques. It was observed that majority of the respondents did not indicate indexing technique since it was new to them. Also it was not commonly used by organizations for environmental risk communication in Tanzania. Most problems associated with the tool, among others, included uncertainties, easy to make errors, and various technological problems. Communication of environmental issues is not well understood because the majority of workers do not have reading culture, inadequate information, and poor data management systems. It is recommended that employees should be educated on the importance of developing reading culture as means for getting up-to-date and relevant information about the state of the environment and associated risks.
