Modeling laminar flow between a fixed impermeable disk and a porous rotating disk
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2005) Kavenuke, Damas Paul
The purpose of this research is to formulate a Mathematical Model that can explain clearly the fluid flow between the fixed impermeable disk and the porous rotating disk. This is a model governing operations of many engineering systems particularly the ceiling fan. The basic equations used in the formulation of the model are the continuity equations and the Navier-Stokes equations. These are reduced into a set of coupled ordinary differential equations through transformation by similarity variables. The coupled ordinary differential equations are solved using perturbation technique and the series solution obtained is improved by applying a numerical method called ‘Pade Approximation’. The findings of the research reveal the effectiveness of the model and meet the supposition that with laminar flow regime, suction increases with increasing speed of rotation of the rotating porous disk. Graphical interpretations have been presented to justify the results by considering specific cases of velocity profiles, pressure as well as shear stress distribution.
