Item Perception of stakeholders on the effectiveness of education centres for out of school teenage mothers: a case study of selected centres.(University of Dar es Salaam, 2004) Kassamia, LeoniaThe purpose of this study was to investigate the perceptions of programme's primary stake holders on the effectiveness of teenage mothers' centres in addressing their needs in Matumaini and UMATI centres in Iringa and Mbeya regions respectively. The study sample comprised 64 respondents from five categories namely; teenage mothers, facilitators, centre managers, other workers and the centre graduates. Research methods used to collect the required data included focused group discussion, interview, questionnaire and documentary review. The findings of the study revealed that, the two centres had introduced non-formal education and vocational training programmes to cater for the educational and training needs of the teenage mothers. The aim of the programmes was to empower teenage mothers to self-determination of reproductive health rights, to help young mothers to finish their primary and secondary education and to provide means of economic independence through vocational education and skills. Although the research findings showed that the programmes were effective in realizing the goals, the startup capital for graduates, the problem of market for the goods produced in the centres remained to be challenges and fears to all participants studied. The programme facilitators were not trained to handle teenage mothers although most of them had other teaching qualifications. In view of the study findings and conclusions, it is recommended that government should make sure that teenage mothers centres are replicated nation-wide to cope with the growing number of out of school teenage. The government should set up special department/programme within both MOEC and MCDGC to be charged with enhancing education for out of school teenage mothers.
