Groundwater management by using mathematical modeling: case of the Makutupora groundwater basin in Dodoma Tanzania
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2000) Kashaigili, Japhet
Water supply for Dodoma National Capital of Tanzania is Makutupora Groundwater Basin, which is located 27km North of Dodoma. Dodoma is one of the drought prone areas of Tanzania. Exploratory observation and production boreholes drilling started early 1948, giving a total of 65 boreholes. Currently, nine production boreholes are in operation. The main objective of the study was to develop a management model that will ease the tasks of decision-makers (planners) in determining a sustainable abstraction volume from the Makutupora groundwater basin and other areas behaving similarly. The computer software package named Visual MODFLOW, a three dimensional finite difference groundwater flow and contaminant transport model was used to simulate unsteady flow in Makutupora Groundwater Basin, a confined aquifer covering an area of 650km . Several simplifying assumptions were made about the boundary conditions and aquifer properties. Faults and rivers were considered as recharge zones and were represented in the model by a series of rectangular blocks. Evaporation was neglected, as the aquifer is a confined one with a confining layer of about 50m thick. The model was first calibrated using a set of observed dynamic water levels, aquifer stress parameters and different values of hydraulic conductivity until the best fitting obtained.
