    The effect of the multi- textbook use in teaching and learning in primary schools in Tanzania: a case study of selected primary schools in Ilala district Dar es Salaam region

    The study explored the effect of multi textbook use in teaching and learning primary schools in Tanzania under four tasks. Firstly, was to examine the availability of relevant textbooks used in primary schools. Secondly, was to investigate teacher’s awareness on the advantage and disadvantage of using multi textbooks in primary schools. Thirdly, was to explore the views of textbook stakeholders on multi textbook system in supporting teaching in primary schools. And fourthly, it was to examine the challenges of using multi textbooks for both teacher and students in primary schools. The study used the qualitative approaches applied in a case study design. The processes and organization mechanism practices aimed at describing how multi textbook system has been practiced in classrooms. Classroom observation checklist, focus group discussion, interviews and questionnaires were used for data collection. The purposely, stratified and simple random sampling techniques were used to select the sample. The sample involved one hundred and thirty (130) pupils, twenty five (25) primary teachers, five (5) head teachers, five publishers, four (4) booksellers, ten (10) parents, one (1) EMAC member, one (1) District Education Officer ,one (1) District Inspector, one (1) MoEVT (Policy planner) and one (1) TIE Official (Curriculum developer).The findings revealed that primary school teachers, and head of the school prefer to use multi -textbook because the system can encourage competition between different publishers, authors for content improvement, build creativity and widen the range of content knowledge to the subject matter and can create the reading culture to the pupils. On the other hand, pupils, parents and policy planner prefer to use single textbooks system because of the uniformity in education system and easy to make follow- ups on the content across the country. The findings also showed that most of education stakeholders such as publisher and booksellers prefer to use multi textbook system out of five only one bookseller agreed with the use of single textbook system because multi- textbook system causes content confusion to the learner. The study findings also revealed that the publisher is faced with the problem of training for authors in textbook development for Tanzania has no college offering publishing courses, and booksellers face market problems. The study recommends that Tanzania should use single textbook system of the uniformity in education system and easy to make follow- ups on the content across the country. The Government should provide the orientation to teachers to review curriculum and develop curriculum materials before actual teaching and prepare short courses in collaboration with school inspectors to in service teachers, to equip them with knowledge. Also, the Government should put more efforts to local publishing company in order to produce standard textbooks and the publishers should effectively supervise their proof readers and editors in their publishing house to strengthen the quality of these textbooks before final production.
