Review of application of project management software in construction projects in Tanzania construction industry
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2006) Kanza, Clara Zacharia
There is evidence that the players of the Cl continued to use traditional methods of project management (PM), despite the fast changing technology, resulting in gross cost and time overrun. Project Management Software (PMS) is meant to facilitate the management of construction project processes. However, the use of PMS in managing construction projects has been very low in Tanzania. This study explored the application and effects of PMS in construction projects performance. The study was done through questionnaires and interviews involving the main players in the CL A total of 33 respondents gave their views. The research established that 61% of the interviewees were aware of PMS but only 21% were utilizing it in construction projects. This is despite that 64% of the respondents were of the opinion that PMS has potential for project performance. The study also established that, 92% of the respondent contractors were using PMS, compared to 40% consultants, making contractors better users of PMS. Furthermore, 67% of the foreign contractors were utilizing PMS compared to only 40% of their local counterparts. Microsoft Office Project was the most popular software, followed by Construction Computer Software and Primavera. Also established in the research was that, only 18% of the respondents considered support and training by manufacturers/suppliers of PMS critical. The research recommends specific remedial actions to be taken by selected players of the industry such as regulatory bodies, institutional and professional associations, learning institutions, National Construction Council, suppliers, individuals and clients.
