    Mortality differentials in Tanzania with special reference to four regions.

    The aim of the thesis in to study mortality differentials between the regions of Tanzania Mainland. The introduction, in chapter 1, deals with the subject of mortality, on how it has generally been a difficult aspect of the human population to study. For this purpose, the nature of the data used in mortality analysis; its limitations and methods of collection are discussed. The thesis is divided into three parts. Part I census data. Firstly, a test is made of the reliability of the data on mortality in Chapter 2. Secondly, in Chapter 3, an attempt is made to establish a level of mortality for each district and region. Apart from the 1967 Census data the writer collected data in the four regions as mentioned above which is the subject of Part II. In Part III of the thesis a scotch is made for the factors that contribute to mortality differentials between the four regions. These are discussed in Chapter 6. Finally, chapter 7 is devoted to the summary and conclusion. The aim of this thesis was to attempt to answer the question: do mortality differentials exist between different regions of “Tanzania and if so, what are the factors behind these differentials. For this purpose an analysis of the 1967 Population Census results was carried out and the findings were checked against another source of data, namely the 1971 Demographic survey which was undertaken by the present writer jointly with another research worker who was concerned with the study of fertility differentials in Tanzania.
