The provision of students' counseling services at the University of Dar es Salaam in the context of University of Dar es Salaam transformation programme
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2007) Kalonge, Bupe Manase
The long term (1993-2008) UDSM institutional Transformation Programme (ITP) aimed at facilitating the UDSM to operate in the 21st century with a clear vision of its present and future role in the fast changing world. The study therefore explored the provision of students' counseling services at the University of Dar es salaam in the context of University of Dar es salaam Transformation programme. The study mainly used the qualitative case study approach to explore the respondents' views and experiences on the provision of the counseling services. The findings indicated that the University had provided the counseling unit with its distinct office under the directorate of students. The students' counseling needs concerned relationships, academic, financial and career problems which differed according to sex, year of study and socio-economic status. All the counseling services were being provided at the counseling centre with the exception of psychiatric cases which were being referred to the referral hospitals. 60% reported to not be aware of the counseling services while among the 40% who reported to be aware of the services only 1.2% were using the services. The resources, both physical and human, were found to be inadequate. It is recommended that, in order for the University to fulfill its transformation programme in the counseling unit, counseling resources should be added and be improved; more advertisements should be made regarding counseling services, the public government and private institutions should make the effort to start counseling degree programme.
