Item Inland intermodal station depots & port congestion reductions: case of Tanzania Port Authority, Dar es Salaam(University of Dar es Salaam, 2016) Kalinga, Lazarous AThe study was aimed at finding out and analyzing the impact of these inland intermodal stations in decongesting the port of Dar es Salaam and how inland intermodal station depots (I.I.S.D) made the Sea port become more efficient and effective as Port of choice for East and Central Africa region. The study used primary and secondary data analysis on data collected from the existing documents and interviews conducted within the organization various operational Container Freight Station (CFS) and Customs & Freight (C&F) agents operating within Mombasa. The study deployed descriptive research design where both primary and secondary data were collected through survey, documentary review, questionnaires, unstructured interviews, and personal observation. In the course of trying to reveal the results of this study, the researcher had to analyze the data both quantitatively and qualitatively using SPSS. The findings were summarized, organized, and presented in tables and bar charts. However, during the study several variables were identified to influence port congestion that lead to ship costs, cargo delay, loss of business to other ports just to mention a few. Such variables identified, include ship turn round time, the container moves per hour and container dwell time. The study found out that the introduction of (I.I.S.D.s) in Tanzania has helped to decongest the port of Dar es Salaam by providing extra container storage areas and more customs centers.
