Information needs on sexual behaviour change among primary school teachers in reducing the spread of HIV/AIDS: a case study of primary school teachers in Mashati division-Rombo District council, Tanzania
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2010) Kaishe-Mulungu, Dativa Donati
The broad objective of this study was to investigate the information needs of primary school teachers on behaviour change with specific reference to Rombo District Council in Kilimanjaro Region. Specific objectives were to identify information sources consulted, strengths and weaknesses of those sources and, lastly, to recommend appropriate information needed for sexual behavioural change among primary school teachers as models and guardians of the entire community. Methodologically, this was a qualitative and quantitative study. Data for this study were collected using a combination of techniques, namely questionnaires with open and close ended questions, face-to-face interviews and focus group discussions. One hundred and five respondents participated in this study. These were drawn from primary schools in Mashati Division, Mashati Ward education co-ordinators and council HIV/AIDS co-ordinators, community development officers as well as education officials. Key findings revealed that Information on behaviour change among primary school teachers in Rombo District is inadequate. Most of the teachers have a narrow knowledge base on sexual behaviours. Findings show that common sexual behavioural problems were multiple sexual relationships, poor condom use, and infidelity. Based on the findings, it is recommended that all primary school teachers should be equipped with knowledge on HIV/AIDS. To facilitate this, relevant stakeholders in HIV/AIDS prevention initiatives should work closely to devise user friendly information systems.
