Experiences of implementing integrated adolescents’ sexuality and reproductive health innovation in Tanzania: a case study in selected ordinary level secondary schools in Dar es salaam
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2007) Kairembo, Romwald Joseph
The main purpose of this study was to investigate experiences on modalities of how the integrated Adolescents’ Sexuality and Reproductive Health (ASRH) innovation was being implemented and discover reasons impeding the innovation to achieve its set objectives. The study was conducted in Dar es Salaam. The sample population included 32 respondents who were selected purposively. Data were collected through documentation, FGDs, interviews and non-participant observation. It was found that implementation of the integrated ASRH innovation was initiated using top-down frame work, and was externally influenced by international campaigns more than national needs. There was lack of a sense of ownership among grassroots’ implementers and users for the ASRH innovation. There was acute short supply of professional ASRH teachers equipped with proposed constructivism strategies for teaching core ASRH skills in selected schools. Inspectors were not involved in monitoring quality assurance. Acute short supply of ASRH materials, were found less than 33 %. Overall, the scarcity impeded of resources smooth execution in selected schools. Most observed teachers overused lecture strategy in classrooms. The emerging social constructivism strategy involving peer groups’ educators is transparent more than formal teachers and parents. Conclusively, findings revealed weaknesses that impeded ASRH innovation in selected schools, implying less seriousness in its implementation. It was recommended that planners use SWOT analysis to re-plan the innovation; Formalise peer group educators new strategy to teach ASRH skills transparently. Let TIE welcome private investors to publish ASRH adequate materials.
