Chemical and mineralogical study of the Amani bauxite deposit, Tanga region, North-East Tanzania
(University of Dar es Salaam, 1991) Joseph, Salutary Mbishi
Chemical and mineralogical studies on the profiles gave rise to gibbsite, goethite, kaolinite, feldspars and tremolite as the minerals in the bauxitic material analysed, where A12O3, TiO2, Fez03(total), SiOz and LOI are the major components in the material. Profiles made in valleys show a direct bauxitization transformation while those on the plateau peaks and their slopes show an indirect transformation on the in-situ weathering material. Based on the rock colour chart and mineralogy the bauxitic material with the range of colour from dark yellow orange to light-brown has been classified as the gibbsitic material, while the kaolinitiC material has the range from grayish orange pink to very light pale orange. On the statistical treatment of the data, cluster analysis has grouped the chemical components into enriched, depleted and resistant to weathering groups in the R-mode. Factor analysis model has grouped the factor scores according to their locations with the characteristic factor score in each locality. Classification based on the composition of major components and mineralogy, Amani bauxite deposit has the characteristic features resembling those of high-silica slope type of the deposit.
