    The impact of HIV/AIDS on labour force in Tanzania: the case of education sector in Makete District
    (University of Dar es Salaam, 2009) Joseph, Isaya
    This study investigated the Impact of HIV/AIDS on Labour Force in Tanzania: The case of Education Sector in Makete District. Recognizing the important role that education sector can play to reduce the risk of losing labour force, the study involved 148 respondents from selected institutions. This study was conducted in various institutions in three wards of Makete district. This study examines the impact of HIV/AIDS on the education sector in Makete district. The main instruments of data collection were interview schedule using questionnaires. Other sources were in-depth interview and documentary sources. Data analysis involved frequency distributions, and cross tabulations. The study findings show that HIV/AIDS have tremendous effects on labour force in the district. The respondents have reported that HIV/AIDS has caused various impacts on labour force in education sector. The impact ranges from increased orphans, absenteeism from workplace, overwork on others, loss of skilled teachers. Other impacts are recruitment costs, medical cost, and loss of morale which in turn the study shows decline performance. The findings from this study point at the five main recommendations, establishment of workplace HIV/AIDS Programme, establishments of HIV/AIDS clubs, mainstreaming HIV/AIDS on curricula, community involvement and funding of Research institution.
