Water quality management: a preliminary evaluation of water quality of thigithe river.
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2006) Joseph, Fredius
The water quality and quantity of Thigithe river were directly measured using flow meter unit, and its quality was analysed through Qual Ile model. The river is subjected to environmental changes, which was caused by waste rock dump. The analysis shows that Thigithe river flows vary from 0.1 to 0.9m3/s with 0.45m3/s per kilometer as incremental flow; mostly generated at middle reaches where there is a waste rock dump and a number of tributaries. The river has dispersion coefficient ranging from 0.03 to 3.8m2/s at those reaches (waste rock dump, areal points source). Due to waste rock dump location; the suspended solids, free ions and total dissolved solids have increased from: 154 to 231mg/L; 252 to 303ppm and 176 to 203mg/L respectively, within the waste rock dump reaches. Furthermore, the Qual Ile model shows that waste rock dump generated a biological oxygen demand ranging from 40 to 50mg/L and dissolved oxygen of 3mg/L around the waste rock dump. The river has recreation rate constant of 5day-1 and sedimentation oxygen demand constant ranging from 2 to 10gm/m2day.
