Assessment of water losses in water distribution networks: a case of Dar es Salaam water and sewerage corporation
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2014) Joseph, Aron
Inadequate water service provisions in urban and rural areas are challenges especially in developing countries. In Tanzania, Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Authorities (UWSAs) are legally mandated to operate since 1998. However, a large amount of water seems to be lost that leads to wastage of other cherished resources; particularly, energy resources. The study aimed at assessing water losses in water distribution networks; the case being Kawe Ward in Kinondoni District serviced by DAWASCO. An experimental setup was done and measurements data for the rate of water losses and factors influencing water losses were collected. Survey method was also used to collect data for Factors Analysis to determine the factors influencing water losses and were analyzed using SPSS 16.0. At the end, the system for water losses management was developed.A sample area with 205 water service connections was selected at 95% Confidence Interval from a District Metered Area (400 – 2000) service connections (Farley et al, 2008), and the method¬ology has been abstracted from International Water Association. Around 6691.29m3 of water is consumed in a sample area per month. Experimental results revealed that 19.4% of water is lost through distribution networks; whereas, 13.8% and 5.4% of total losses constitute the factors for apparent losses and real losses respectively. Factors Analysis results shows that there are likelihood significant differences between factors influencing water losses (F (10, 2243) = 40.369, p<0.05) and hence; reject null hypothesis.
