Contribution of inspection recommendations in improving secondary school students’ learning in Tanzania: a Case of Morogoro Municipality
(University of Dar es Salaam,, 2017) Jonas, Milembe
This study was conducted in Morogoro Municipality and it aimed at assessing the contribution of inspection recommendations in improving secondary school students’ learning. The specific objectives of the study were to: determine the extent to which the inspection recommendations given by inspectors are implemented to improve students’ learning; identify challenges that face teachers when implementing inspection recommendations and suggest ways that can help effective implementation of inspection recommendations to make them more useful in improving students’ learning. The study mainly employed qualitative approach, case study design with sample size of twenty six respondents. Data were collected using interviews, documentary reviews and observation; and analyzed by using qualitative content analysis. The results of the study show that there was little or no effective implementation of Inspection Recommendations (IRs) and therefore little or no students’ learning improvement had been realized. Effective inspection recommendations implementation was impeded by challenges such as: unimplemented inspection recommendations; students’ failure not given emphasis in inspection recommendations, minimal participation of key stakeholders to access and implement inspection recommendations, lack of proper monitoring and follow up and insufficient supportive facilities. The study then identified some suggested means that if well addressed can improve inspection recommendations implementation and thereafter students’ learning will be improved. These issues are: conducting more school inspections; improving inspection recommendations; participation of key stakeholders inspection recommendations access and implementation; improving monitoring and follow up of the implementation process by organizing seminars, workshops and forums that may allow discussions of inspection recommendations and providing sufficient supporting facilities; physical such as human, books, desks, water; and fiscal to facilitate inspections. Lastly, the study has recommended for further research that; this study assessed only the contribution of inspection recommendations in improving secondary school students’ learning. Therefore, there is need to assess contribution of inspection recommendations in improving learning in other levels of education.
