Item An assessment of school committees’ performance in managing primary schools in Tanzania: a case study of Bagamoyo District in Coast Region(University of Dar es Salaam, 2009) John, Lucas MzelelaThis study intended to assess school committees’ performance in managing primary schools in Tanzania. Specifically the study aimed at assessing performance of school committees in acquiring adequate physical facilities, managing physical and financial resources as well as mobilizing parents and other community members in school development activities. Questionnaire, interview, documentary review and observation were used to collect data from the field. The Operative Goal Performance Model was used to measure the level of performance. The study found that school committees’ performance in acquiring physical facilities was “average”; in managing physical facilities and financial resources was “good” and mobilizing parents and community members in school activities was “average”. The general performance of school committees in managing primary school was “average” due to number of reasons: These are lack of basic management and follow up trainings, lack of adequate information about their new managerial responsibilities and working documents, lack of cooperation from village governments and communities at large, shortage of financial resources and poverty among community members affected their performance as well. The study recommended that school committee members should be both trained and retrained regularly on managerial skills, provided with current working documents, given cooperation from village governments and should be given adequate funds.
