The main objective of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of the existing measures of handling conflicts between farmers and herders over land use in Mbarali in Usangu Plains in Mbeya region. In particular, the study assessed the causes of conflicts, past and present ways of managing conflicts, current methods used and how effective they were in dealing with land use disputes. The target populations were the farmers, herders, agro-herders and government officials. The study employed Key informants interviews, field observations, Focus Group Discussions. Documentations and questionnaires. Both purposive and random samplings were used to select respondents for the study. The findings indicated that the methods used to manage conflicts between farmers and herders in the area were effective. The use of eviction of herders., destocking and other methods indicated that conflicts between the two groups in the area had been minimized . The conflicts between farmers and herders had been ignited by factors such as population pressure, change in policy, corruption and poverty, weak political institutions, limited grazing land and large number of herds. The effects of these conflicts were such as loss of individual incomes, government revenues, deaths and injuries, permanent disabilities and lack of peace and tranquility. Lastly, the study proposed the possible ways of dealing with the problems in area. the study also provides the recommendation of what should be done to tackle farmer-herder conflicts.
