Factors leading to labour turnover at social security institutions in Tanzania: the case of national social security fund
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2011) John, Consolata
The aim of this study is to assess factors leading to labour turnover at Social Security Institutions in Tanzania using National Social Security Fund (NSSF) as a case study. Specifically, this study aims to investigate managerial opinion on the reasons for labour turnover in NSSF, employees’ attitude toward leaving or staying with the organization and factors leading to employee turnover in NSSF. The study employed survey method which involved 50 respondents. The surveyed data were analyzed using tabulation method that involved frequencies and percentages, together with content analysis. The study findings indicated that both “intrinsic” and “extrinsic” factors influence labour turnover at Social Security Institutions in Tanzania. Intrinsic factors include lack of recognition, lack of training opportunities, poor communication of policies, roles and goals of the Organization; rigid policies and procedures, poor promotion system and poor employees socialization. Extrinsic factors include job availability, increased competition for labour force and pay differentials among various work Organizations. From the study findings, it is generally recommended that management of Social Security Institutions should develop proper ways of recognizing employees’ efforts, change rigid policies and procedures; develop clear communication systems and develop effective training opportunities to eradicate labour turnover in Social Security Institutions in Tanzania.
