    Assessing factors affecting adoption of mobile money payment in Tanzania

    This study aimed at assessing factors affecting adoption of mobile money payment in Tanzania. The study intended to answer three research questions: (1) what is the extent of adoption of mobile money payment in Tanzania? (2) What are the factors affecting adoption of mobile money payment in Tanzania; and (3) what is the relationship between adoption of mobile money payment and the identified factors. The target population of this study comprised of the mobile phone subscribers in Dar es Salaam. The study found that only 15% of respondents used mobile money services to pay for the purchased goods at the shops (P2B) while 75% used the service for paying for remote services (such as LUKU, DAWASCO, etc.). Majority, which amount to 94.2 % of respondents use the mobile money services for sending or receiving money (P2P). This shows that there is a revenue stream which is not well utilized. The study also found that a significant relationship between mobile money payment adoption and awareness, service availability, easier of use, service quality, network reliability advantage over cash payment and more convenient. Security, transaction cost has also an effect on adoption of mobile money payment though did not feature in the Multiple regression model. The study, therefore, recommends that MNOs replace the usage of USSD code with simple means for customers to access the mobile money payment menu. Technologies such as SIM Tool Kit (STK) and Near Field Communication (NFC) and increase number of MMP merchants.
