Item The role of upstream vertical alliances on small and medium enterprises (SME’s) in Tanzania: the case of Dar es Salaam(University of Dar es Salaam, 2007) Jahulula, Masunga pharesThe main objective of this study was to assess the role of upstream vertical alliances on small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) in Tanzania, for their contribution toward poverty alleviation. The research examined the role of SMEs revolution in upstream vertical alliance on internationalization of business activity. Special reference was on emerging economies and their implications for global marketing. The target of the study was to involve 40 SMEs. In this research, information was collected from SME's Representatives/owners, managers and workers including various institutions. For this case the interview, questionnaire, reports, papers, documents and focus group discussion methods were used for data collection. Findings revealed that upstream vertical alliances play a great role in enabling SMEs to address their organizational problems. But there are stumbling blocks, which hinder them to access such services due to ignorance of their existence and financial inabilities. Literature sources suggest that upstream vertical alliance (UVA) applications such as workflow systems and groupware systems may have diluted the traditional market failure arguments for vertical integration of firms' chain suppliers mechanism and contributed to internationalization of research and development including rapid growth of business alliances. It is recommended that SMEs stakeholders' efforts should be directed towards offering training for business linkages knowledge to small and medium sized enterprises in Tanzania.
