Assessment of the impact of bricks burning on forests: a case of Ileje district in Mbeya region, Tanzania
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2012) Jacob, Aswile
This study aimed at assessing the impact of brick burning on forests in Ileje District. To achieve this objective, 70 respondents from Itumba and Isongole wards in Ileje District were interviewed Both quantitative and qualitative approaches were used in assessing the impact of brick burning on forests. Questionnaires coupled with observation were administered to the respondents and interviews were conducted to key informants. Documentary review was mainly done at University of Dar es salaam main library and District and Wards reports enriched this study. The data collected were analyzed by means of SPSS programme, and the results presented in descriptive form. It was revealed that wood fuel is the principal source of energy for brick burning activities in the studied wards. The on-going burnt bricks house construction exacerbates forest resources depletion for there were little efforts invested in tree planting. The pace of cutting down trees surpasses the tree planting efforts. It was, however, found that brick burning activities contribute towards improvement of people’s livelihood. The money accrued from selling burnt bricks enable people to meet their socio-economic and medical needs. There is a dire need of enhancing cooperation among the Government, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and villagers in implementing afforestation programes and promoting the use of wood fuel energy sustainably.
