The effectiveness of microcomputer-based laboratory in teaching and learning biology in a’level secondary schools in Tanzania
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2010) Issa, Toroka, Mwanaidi
The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which the use of ICT particularly Microcomputer-Based Laboratory technology facilitates Biology teaching/learning in A ‘Level secondary schools in Tanzania. The main focuses was on how MBL activities could be used instead of traditional laboratory works to facilitate students learning, to increase students’ attitude towards biology (science) teaching/learning and to increase students’ academic performance. The study was conducted in Ilala and Kinondoni District in Dar es Salaam region.Quasi-experimental research design was used to investigate the relationship by exposing one group of students to experimental group and another group to control group whereby quantitative and qualitative methods were used. A sample of 62 students was purposefully selected from two schools. These involved 19 students from school X which was an experimental school and 43 students from school Y which was a control group. Data collection involved classroom activities based on MBL for experimental group as well as traditional laboratory instruction for control group. It also involved pre test/post-tests, questionnaire and focus group discussion. Data were analysed using procedure stated in Chapter three. The research findings showed that MBL facilitated Biology teaching/learning more effectively compared to Traditional Laboratory method. Experimental group (where MBL was implemented) showed positive attitude of MBL toward biology teaching/learning and the results showed that MBL activities increases pupils’ academic performance. The study concluded that MBL is more useful in Biology teaching and learning. However, it should be used with Traditional Laboratory so as to enable students to be able to manipulate variables.
