The impact of hospital counselling services in enhancing maternal health: a case of three health centers in Morogoro Municipality
(University of Dar es Salaam,, 2012) Israel, Happy
This research study probes the contribution of counseling services in hospital s/health centers in promoting maternal and child health in Morogoro Municipality, and possible reasons for Tanzania’s high level of maternal mortality. Globally, every year more than 500,000 women die during pregnancy or deliveries, and 90 percent of these deaths occur in Africa and Asia (Engender Health, 2010). Most of the deaths are often of the preventable kind. The purpose was to find out the approaches which are used to encourage pregnant women and their partners to attend counseling services as well as investigating the areas which have to be covered during counseling services. The study’s empirical part was conducted through a fieldwork in Morogoro where mothers and health personnel were reached for questionnaires and interviews. Many pregnant women were satisfied with the counseling services they received and further stated that both accessibility and availability of maternal care was good. One of the possible solutions to the high ratio of maternal mortality is that Tanzanian women visit antenatal services later than recommended. Also, the access to emergency obstetric care is somehow not good. Further, it is likely that under- registration of maternal death is present in Tanzania. In this case, an issue that must be dealt with in order to receive accurate statistics is to enable interventions targeted at lowering the maternal mortality.
