Item Effects of non-monetary rewards on employees in Tanzania’s public higher learning institutions : the case of University of Dar es Salaam(University of Dar es Salaam, 2012) Ijumba, Wilbert MwemeziThis study assessed the effects of non-monetary rewards on employees in Tanzania’s public higher learning institutions, using the University of Dar es Salaam as case study specifically, the study established the types of non-monetary rewards, criteria used and the effect of these rewards on employees at University of Dar es Salaam. The qualitative study relied on data collected through the use of close-ended questionnaire as well as documentary review. The data collected were subjected to descriptive analysis with the use of frequencies, tables and percentages. The findings of the study revealed that most of the employees at the University of Dar es Salaam would like to be recognised their work, acknowledged and appreciated through non-monetary rewards such as certificates of merit, more responsibilities, training and development. The criteria used to reward employees at University of the Dar es Salaam findings revealed the fact that majority had never been given non-monetary rewards, never been involved in the process of setting criteria to be used neither these criteria explained clearly to the employees. On the whole the types and criteria for non-monetary rewards at the University remain a non-public issue, thus, the study recommended that the University should empower and implement a strong HR department capable of accommodating the needs of all employees by enforcing an effective rewards system that would motivate the workers to scale greater heights. The University HR Department should develop a reward system which attracts, retains, and motivates personnel, as well as provides training and opportunities for high performance, motivation, and job satisfaction.
