Item Performance appraisal systems in Tanzania armed forces: a case study of Tanzania prisons(University of Dar es Salaam, 2010) Igongi, Rajabu HassanThe performance appraisal system in Prisons service department was studied among the Prisons employees in work stations in Dar es Salaam region with aim of examining whether OPRAS has been adopted and practised in the Prisons department. Fifty four (54) participants-47 (87.03%) males and 07 (12.96%) females voluntarily responded to the questionnaires. Data collection was done from August to September 2009 in Prisons working stations in Dar es Salaam region. Data gathering was done using structured questionnaire with 25 items. The instrument taped information on demographic data, the status and acceptability of the existing appraisal system, differences and similarities between the existing appraisal system and OPRAS and the appropriateness of OPRAS in Prisons department. Data collection was also done through documentary review. Data analysis was done both qualitatively and quantitatively for questionnaire-based information and the data from documentary review was subjected to content analysis. The study found that the Prisons service department conducts performance appraisal to its employees on December each year. It was revealed that the performance appraisal system currently in use in Prisons department does not provide opportunity for staff to understand their performance's weaknesses and areas for improvements. It is therefore, recommended that the Prisons department should adopt OPRAS in appraising its employees. It is further recommended that the OPRAS form be in Swahili version so that it can easily be understood and accurately filled-in by employees.
