Contribution of women’s off-farm income generating activities toward financing education in rural Tanzania: the case of Kilosa District, Morogoro
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2011) Hillary, Christopher Reuben
A study was conducted in 5 divisions of Kilosa district in order to explore Contribution of Women’s Off-farm Income Generating Activities toward Financing Education in Rural Tanzania, taking Kilosa district as the case of study. The research approach was qualitative research. Sample size included 56 respondents (45 women engaging in off-farm income generating activities, 5 key local government informants and 3 primary school Head Teachers and 3 secondary school Headmasters/mistresses). Data was collected using interview schedules and Focus Group Discussions (FGD). Data analysis was conducted by data reduction techniques in order to identify major themes. Findings revealed that women indulged in off-farm income generating activities such as making and selling local beer brewing, shanty hotels, fishes, charcoal, tailoring, embroidery, just to mention few of them, play an important role toward financing education of many children in rural areas in Tanzania. Most of women operated their small businesses while facing challenges such as lack of capital, patriarchal system, little government support, low education level, small access to financial institutions for loans and market information. Little entrepreneurship training opportunities for women were not designed to fit the participants’ needs. Poverty, corruption and shortage of professional extension and agricultural officers are some of the challenges facing off-farm activities in rural areas. It is recommended that there is a need for government, its organs, NGOs, financial institutions and other interested individuals to assist women participating in off-farm activities at diverse capacities to help them finance the education of their children.
