The influence of social license to operate on the performance of oil and gas projects in Tanzania: the Case of Songo Songo to Dar es Salaam Gas Project
(University of Dar es Salaam,, 2017) Hiliyai, Lameck
Social license to operate means community acceptance to developmental projects undertaken around their area. Despite the fact that there are on-going gas projects in Tanzania for the past decade, to date, the social license to operate in gas related projects in Tanzania is still at its infancy. The indicators for this assertion are limited availability of studies in Tanzania on the social license to operate for gas projects. This study assessed the community involvement, communication and dialogue and their influence on the performance of the gas projects in Tanzania. Data were collected from 100 respondents who are gas project stakeholders involving project implementers and community members. Judgmental and simple random sampling techniques were used for obtaining data from respondents. Basing on regression analysis, and study hypotheses, assessment of the influence of social license to operate on the performance of gas projects was done. The findings of the study revealed that community involvement, communication and dialogues positively influence the performance of gas projects in Tanzania. It was realized that dialogues, meetings and communication techniques such as websites, posters and social networking tools are required for improving the effect of the social license to operate in the performance of gas projects. The study further revealed that community involvement, communication and dialogues reduce the likelihood of resistance and sabotage against gas projects. It is recommended that further studies be conducted in Tanzania with a larger population for comparing the results of such investigations with this study. This study has significant inputs to the review of policies related with energy projects in Tanzania.
