    The influence of paid domestic work on girls Attendance in Mbozi District community secondary schools

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of paid domestic work in girls' attendance in Mbozi District's Community Secondary Schools. The study intended to accomplish the five 'major objectives namely; identifying the types of activities engaged in by secondary school girls as paid domestic work and examining factors which force secondary school girls in paid domestic work. Others were, determining the effects of paid domestic labour to secondary school girls, investigating the effectiveness of the available policies in reducing the problem of paid domestic labour to school girls and exploring the appropriate strategies to reduce the Problem of g paid domestic labour to secondary school girls. Data for this study were collected from Mbozi District. The study consisted of 59 respondents composed of school age working girls, parents of school age working girls, parents of non-working school girls, employers of school age working girls, labour officers, social welfare officers, teachers and school girls. The study used qualitative approach, employing case study design where the required data were collected through interviews, documents search, and focus group discussion. Data were processed through thematic analysis. The study findings revealed that, first, paid domestic labour to girls in Tanzanian community secondary schools was mainly caused by economic, cultural and social environments and the inconsistency of laws and regulations regarding school age girls. Second, the rural communities' awareness and struggles for the basic rights of girl children are still highly low. Thirdly, although a variety of interventions and policies are in place, there are gaps which hinder the effectiveness of these policies and interventions. The study recommends that, the government should fight to empower economically the rural communities and improve the community secondary schools' environments to attract the students to learn and yield out higher achievements. The government has to empower the social welfare and the labour officers to work effectively in their responsible areas.
