(University of Dar es Salaam, 2014) Hassan, Siwazuri
This study assessed the effect of selected factors on employee retention in the public secondary school teachers in Tanzania. The study was conducted in Temeke Municipal Council. Three specific objectives guided this study. These specific objectives were to examine the extent to which access to training and development, job satisfaction and teachers’ attitude towards public secondary school teaching relates to employee retention. The data were collected through documentary sources, questionnaire and were analyzed by using SPSS whereas frequency distribution, and descriptive statistics were used as initial tools for analysis. Purposive sampling technique was used to select a sample of 100 participants. A total of 20 public secondary schools in Temeke Municipal Council were involved. The findings revealed that teachers affected adversely towards employee retention. This is because there are large numbers of problems which encounters teaching field such as low provision of salaries, the absence of recognition for highly performed teachers and lack of motivation However, they agreed that access to training and development as well as teachers attitude towards public secondary school teaching had positive attitudes towards employee retention. This is because teachers like the teaching job and value teaching as other careers. The study recommends that in order for teachers to remain in the teaching professional, the government should make sure that access to training and development, job satisfaction and teachers’ attitude towards public secondary school are well organized and improved.
