Determining household food security status in Zanzibar an analysis of Zanzibar 2009/10 household budget survey
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2014) Hassan, Fadhil Ali
The main objective of the study was to determine the household food security status in Zanzibar by analyzing data of 2009/10 Household Budget Survey. It is estimated that about 41% of annual food requirements in Zanzibar are imports which is affected by several external factors such as world market price fluctuation, and so household food security status in Zanzibar is uncertain. The survey utilized a two – stage stratified random sampling design in which the first stage involved the selection of EAs using probability proportional to size (PPS) from each district of the ten districts of Zanzibar. The second stage involved the selection of households from each selected EA using systematic simple random sampling. Data was analyzed using both SPSS 18 and STATA 11 and the Logistic Regression model was adopted to examine the determinants of food security. The recommended daily minimum required intake calories were used to measure food security status per household. The results revealed that many households in Zanzibar were food secure. Variables age of household head, household sizes, and household main source of income from fishing and selling of crops, household number of sources of income, household ownership of livestock and size of farmland acres owned by household were found to be statistically significant to explain the household food security status. The study recommends the use of family planning to reduce household size, reduce electricity costs for poor people to afford, closeness of water and transport infrastructures to society and create more employment opportunities to reduce high dependency ratio.
