    Effectiveness of hiv/aids intervention programmes in secondary schools in Dar es Salaam

    This study investigated the effectiveness of HIV/AIDS intervention programs in secondary schools in Kinondoni District. The study in volved a total of 228 respondents comprising of 192 students from ten selected secondary schools, 30 teachers and six officials from the selected NGOs. The study revealed that a large proportion of secondary school students were aware of HIV/AIDS, ways through which the pandemic could be transmitted as well as the various HIV/AIDS intervention programs that were going on in secondary schools. Further, the study showed that the content of HIV/AIDS education provided to secondary school students was relevant in terms of influencing change of behaviour among them. Accordingly, the study established that the methods used to deliver HIV/AIDS education such as the use of peer educators, conferences, sports and games, fliers and pamphlets, seminars and meetings were effective in influencing change of behaviour among students. The study gave recommendations to the government, the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training, and to other various actors involved in providing HIV/AIDS education to youth and secondary school students to improve youth awareness on HiV/AIDS.
