Assessment of the effectiveness of Tanzania mining and construction workers union (TAMICO) in relation to labor turnover, the case of north Mara gold mines
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2010) Gotora, Lucy
The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of TAMICO in relation to labour turnover in the Mining sector, in North Mara Gold mine (Tarime District). The study examined the role and functions of TAMICO in North Mara Gold Mines; investigated the factors that cause employees' turnover; and assessed the extent to which the employer complies with labour law The study sample comprised 80 respondents' employee and non employees who wire drawn randomly. Purposive sampling methods were also employed. The sampling selection from TAMICO leader based only on field branch leaders. These involved 2 trade union leaders. Data collection methods included questionnaires and interviews. The finding of the study revealed that lack of government support, incompetence of trade leaders, ignorance of employees about laws and their rights were among the factors that affected the effectiveness of TAMICO. However, the findings show that employees were leaving the organization due to unequal treatment between workers, low salary and heavy work load as well as long working hours. This happened because the employer failed to comply with labour laws. The study recommends that the management system of North Mara Gold Mine should recognize trade union operation at North Mara mine. Moreover, the management system at North Mara is advised to be changed. The trade union is advised not only to look at salaries but also working conditions, job and security. The management should also look on motivating factors such as recognition, development and advancement of employees.
