A comparative study on e-basking services: the case Of Crdb Buk Tauaata And Kingdom Bank Limited Zimbabwe
(University of Dar es Salaam,, 2012) Gondo, Patience
In this study the attitudes of consumers towards electronic banking services were compared between Tanzania and Zimbabwe. The level of awareness, acceptance and uiage was investigated and compared given that the technology is still in its infancy, A descriptive research design was employed using both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The results from the study reveal that while consumers in Zimbabwe are more aware of the developments of e-banking, their Tanzanian counterparts still lag behind in information regarding the existence and benefits derived from the usage of c banking. It is surprising that after decades of proliferation of ebanking queues in the banks in Tanzania remain an unsolved matter with some customers preferring to be served by tellers. Adoption rates have remained minimal and usage of this technology has remained low in both countries owing to different reasons. In Tanzania people still prefer to use the traditional way of visiting the banking halls, queueing for hours waiting for service. The research revealed that low levels of usage that some customers cannot even read instructions thus they might not even understand nor follow the information. Coupled to this is the fact that e banking requires the most consumer involvement and study revealed that many customers are not literate such that they prefer the traditional way. However the Zimbabwean context is slightly different to that of Tanzania that while e banking has been readily accepted, usage remains low too because of the inaccessibility of the internet to many. The collapse of the banking system in Zimbabwe has been another challenge to the development of electronic banking. After the dollarization of the economy of Zimbabwe, people now prefer to carry their cash rather than bank because of the lack of confidence in the banking system. The customers of Zimbabwe were more conversant with the technology compared to those of Tanzania though there is a small gap in terms of usage and acceptance for the stated reasons. The Recommendation that there is need to promote aggressively the concepts of electronic banking and their benefits to the consumers of both nations to reap the intended benefits. Without the consumer awareness the banks will waste resources in trying to outdo each other while the consumers are ignorant of the industry developments.
