    Parents’s, teachers' and pupils' attitude towards corporal punishment in schools

    The aim of this study was to explore parents, teachers and pupils' attitude towards corporal puhshnent (CP) in schools Tbe study also aimed at finding out how parents' and teadiers' use ofCP and athtude of Un effects of CP to children innuenced their altitude towards its use in schools- The specilic objectives of this study were: to explore parents', teachers' and pupils' general attitude towards CP and heir altitude towads its use in schools; to explore the relationship between parents', teachers' and pupils' use of corporal punishnnnt and their attitude towards its use in schools. The study also aimed at exploring the relationship between parents'. teachers' and pupils' views on the effects ofcorporal punishment to children and their altitude towards its use in schools, to explore plants', archers' and pupils' abide towards die need lo balance the application of corporal punishment at home and corporal punishment al school, to deplore parents', teachers' and pupils' knowledge of the Ministry of Education's CP regulation in schools. The study involved a total of 199 respondents, 99 being parents. 50 teachers and 50 pupils. Out ofthe 199 respondents, 102 were females and 97 were males. All respondents were from four wards in llala District which is one of the 3 disticts in Dar es Salaam Region- The findings indicated that parents, teachers and pupils thought Ihat CP was a good method of disciplining children both at home and in schools. They also thought that if it was abolished in schools, children's behaviour would become intolerable. Results indicated that parents, teachers and pupils supported the use of corporal punishment to discipline children regardless of the fact that they were aware of the effects of corporal punishment to children Results showed that parents were unaware of the Ministry of Education's regulations about corporal punishment and therefore ere not interested in how their children were disciplined while at school. Recommendations were made on the need to involve parents, tethers and pupils on Ihe debate about Ihe usefulness of corporal punishment in disciplining children and the subsequent effects of its use.
