    Thousands of Tanganyika’s Chagga Tribesmen, who gathered at Moshi in November to celebrate “Chagga Day”— the anniversary of the installation of Paramount Chief Marealle II—were told by Chief Marealle that Chaggaland, thousands of acres of rich coffee country on the slopes of Kilimanjaro, had been placed by the Almighty in a position from which it can provide light to Tanganyika and to the rest of Africa. The tribesmen, many of whom were dressed in clean white European-style shirts to signify the tribe’s position as one of the most progressive in the territory, shuffled uncomfortably as Chief Marealle continued: “Personal jealousies and ambitions have recently divided our people and robbed us of much of our tribal prestige and standing. Under the guise of democracy, local politicians have openly lied and smothered facts and figures. Whilst it is true to say that we are a long way from our desired goals in the various fields ... it is utterly untrue to say that little or nothing has been done. Our humble achievements are acknowledged not only by thousands of Chagga themselves, but even more by impartial observers from many parts of the world.”
