Assessment of the applicability of data collection methodology for estimating quantities and qualities of faecal sludge (Q&Q model) in Dar es Salaam.
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2018) Esanju, Miriam Michael
Faecal sludge management is an essential component in attaining the sustainable development goal on water and sanitation. On-site sanitation (OSS) facilities are common faecal sludge (FS) containment system used in Sub-Saharan African countries by more than 80% of the population. FS from OSS containments need to be collected, transported, treated and disposed healthily when volumetric capacity is attained. For proper choice, design and management of the FS technology, accurate quantification and characterization process are of great importance. This study aimed at assessing the applicability of data collection methodology for quantification and qualification of FS in Dar es Salaam. The data collection methodology put into consideration the Spatially Analyzed Demographic, Environmental and Technical data (SPA-DET) in estimation of FS quantity and quality. Sampling plan developed from SPA-DET data was implemented in sample collection and analysis in the laboratory for Total Solids (TS), Total Suspended Solids (TSS), Total Volatile Solids (TVS), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), pH, Temperature and Electric Conductivity (EC). Statistical analyses were conducted to determine correlation between design parameters. FS analyzed had mean values of 17,724±1286 mg/l COD,11950±5800mg/l TSS, 8830±5208mg/l TVS, 4.13±0.6ms/cm EC, 4.65±0.3 pH, 21.89±3.4 temperature and 14,954±12704mg/l TS. A strong relationship between the design parameters was observed indicating their dependency on one another. / Similarly, A strong correlation (r=0.73) of FS emptied volume between the estimated values collected by questionnaire to calculated volume from laser measurement gives confidence of estimating some FS design parameters based on the questionnaire output.
