Development of mobile bank agent system: the case of national microfinance bank (Tanzania)
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2012) Erasto, Charles
The banking sector in the United Republic of Tanzania like other developing countries is being faced with a challenge of extending its formal banking services to unbanked and under banked communities. This has resulted into a few users of the bank service, travel costs to follow the service and queues at banking facilities which is customer dissatisfaction and wastage of time resource. Retail banks are also looking into cost effective channel to serve the low value but high volume customer segment. The purpose of this research was to develop a mobile banking agent (MBA) system to enable retail banks to extend their banking services to unbanked and under banked communities. The MBA system based mainly on the bank-led model approach (Porteous, 2006) to mobile banking implementation but also includes some elements of Non bank-led model such as a use of bank agents. The MBA system software prototype was developed using object oriented analysis and design approach. The developed prototype enables the bank to provide cash deposit and withdraw services to its customers through bank agents using mobile phone or point of sale devices. It also allows customers to transfer money and check balance using their mobile phones. It can also be extended to include mobile payment services in future. The research provides important information for the banks to start exploring mobile banking implementation in a combined approach where both transformational and additive approaches work together to reach the unbanked/under banked, improve customer satisfaction and reduce costs.
