(University of Dar es Salaam, 2014) Emanueli, Godfrey
The main purpose of this study was to examine teachers’ absenteeism in public secondary schools in Tanzanian context. Specifically, the study aimed at analyzing the levels of absenteeism among teachers in public secondary schools, to determine the effects of teachers’ absenteeism on students’ performance in public secondary schools and to determine which strategies can be put in place to minimize absenteeism. The study was conducted at Hai District, Kilimanjaro region in selected schools namely Lyamungo, Machame and Lyasikika secondary schools. The study used questionnaire, interview and documentary review as the tools for data collection. The study used a sample size of 50 employees (Teachers), 40 of whom were given questionnaire and 10 were interviewed face to face. The findings reveal that, 45(90%) respondents strongly agreed that poor working condition is causing absenteeism to employees. Also 30(60%) respondents responded that poor management style may be a factor contributing to employee’s absenteeism in organization. Then 46(92%) strongly agreed that low wages and salaries is a factor which resulted into employee’s absenteeism and 48(96%) respondents agreed that low or poor promotion and salaries are among the factor which leads to employee absenteeism. On the other hand, 49(98%) of responses also agreed that poor facilities are factor initiating the employees’ absenteeism. The study has recommended that, the government should create an environment of trust to its employees by improving salaries, management style, working conditions, facilities as well as improving promotion and growth for employees.
